I scanned it but it is quite faded so I’ve transcribed it as well. The letter belonged to Ida Collins Rudd and was written by her cousin Hattie in Crittenden on December 22, 1884. From the clues in the letter I determined cousin Hattie to be Harriet Sheldon.

Hattie mentions that Pa will be 60 years old tomorrow. This would match Benjamin Sheldon’s birthdate December 23, 1824. She also said Charlie told Ma he will come at New Years and I hope he will tell Herb and Chas. I think she is talking about Charles Rudd, as Herb and Chas that the company will not be complete with out them. This would be Ida’s brothers. She also mentions Fred Stafford being there on Sunday. That would be their cousin, son of Martha Collins and Gardner Stafford.

I found an odd article in the newspaper in connection with Benjamin Sheldon.

Buffalo Morning Express July 3, 1886 page 8
Benjamin Sheldon of Crittenden, this county, was arrested yesterday by deputy Marshal Donohue.
Sheldon is charged with opening letters directed to other parties. United States Commissioner
Strong adjourned the case until Tuesday next to give the defendant time to procure witnesses.

Buffalo Evening News WEDNESDAY, JULY 7, 1886 Front page
Strictly Personal [Column]
Benjamin Sheldon has been acquitted of opening Mr. Rudd’s letters, showing full authority for doing so.

This has to be about Charles Rudd, who was Ida Collins husband, or at least they had a child together in December of that year. I think he disappeared months before their daughter Ella was born.
Michele

————-
Crittenden, Dec. 22 ,/84

Dear Cousin Ida,
I will now answer your kind letter I began a letter to Saturday night but did not get it finished but will try and do better with this one. I would love to find Prusia Collins maiden name but no one has stumbled on it yet.
